    Common questions.

    Q. When do I need a tail light converter (V5410) for my car and trailer?

A.1. When your car lighting system has a separate turn-signal lamp from the brake and tail light. The V5410 is an electronic trunk connector which converts vehicle lighting systems with separate turn signals to the conventional trailer lighting system.

A.2. This turn signal converter allows standard trailer lighting combined stop/turn lights to be connected to the wiring in cars which have rear turn signal lights separate from the stop lights.

    Q. How can a customer check the 5410 converter to see if it is working correctly?

    A. To check the right turn function: Connect the green wire to positive (+) and the red wire to ground and the right turn output function of the 5410 converter should operate. To check the left turn function: Connect the yellow wire to positive (+) and the red wire to ground and the left turn output function of the 5410 converter should operate. To check the Stop function: Connect the red wire to positive (+) and either or both the green and/or yellow wire to ground and the stop output function of the 5410 converter should operate. The Brown wire (Tail) and white wire (ground) are straight through wires.

    Q. Does Peterson have a typical hookup diagram for the 5410 converter?

    A. Yes. Following is the typical hookup Diagram: Note this converter must be connected to the towing vehicle lights because the 5410 circuit uses the towing vehicle bulb filaments to complete the electronic circuit path to ground. The 5410 converter will not operate correctly unless the current paths to ground are connected.

NOTE: If the towing vehicle has LED lamps resistors (RCD 6206R2xB) must be added to complete the installation.

  • 5410 Converter Installation Instructions

Instructions provided courtesy of Peterson Mfg. Co.

  • STEP 1 Generally determine where the converter will be located on your vehicle. This converter should be located externally and the wires need to pass through to the internal wiring so a hole needs to be drilled large enough to pass 5 wires. Make sure the chosen location allows the converter plug and wires to reach the trailer connector.

  • STEP 2 locate the wiring in the trunk or on the the rear of the tow vehicle which controls the stop lights, the right turn signal, the left turn signal and the tail lights. If you do not see wires extending from the lights on the inside of the vehicle then you will have to partially remove the trunk liner or interior liner enclosing the lights and wiring.

  • STEP 3 After exposing the wiring and the rear of the lights identify the car wire that controls the brake lights (have someone push the brake pedal while you identify the bulb and and wire location that energizes it. This should be a common wire that connects both stop lights). Splice* the red wire from the tail light converter into this wire. It may be connected near either light or anywhere on the the wire between the lights.

  • STEP 4 In A Similar manner splice* the brown wire into the tail light circuit. This is also a common wire connecting both tail lights; which will light when the park or headlights are on.

  • STEP 5 Splice* the green wire on the converter marked "to car-right turn"to the right turn signal light wiring.m (Identify by turning ignition to "on" and Moving the turn signal switch to the right turn position. Note the bulb and wire location for this function).

  • STEP 6 Splice* the yellow wire on the converter marked "to car-left turn" to the left turn signal light wiring.(Identify similar to step 5 except;move the turn signal switch to the left turn position. This bulb and wire will be symmetrically opposite the right turn position).
