Front and rear side marker lights are used to indicate a vehicle's or trailer's presence, length, and width.
All trailers are required by the Department of Transportation to have rear side marker and front side marker lights. These must be PC rated and placed as far back and as far forward as possible.
Also, any trailer that is 30 feet (9.1 m) in length or longer is required to use side marker lights to show that it is a long trailer.
Additionally, any trailer that is 80 inches (2.032 m) or wider must use rear and front clearance lamps to indicate the vehicle's width.
